If no parameters are passed, the template will display as above (i.e., {{split}}).

To suggest article names (or more than one), simply pipe them into the template. For example, {{split|<Article 1>|<Article 2>|<Article 3>}} produces:

Up to 20 new names can be suggested.

To indicate that only parts of the current article should be split (and therefore no disambiguation page is necessary), use part=yes. For example, to prose a split of an article into two articles, using {{split|<Article 1>|<Article 2>|<part=yes>}} produces:

To add the year and month the template was added to the article, use date=May 2013.

To specify where the discussion about this split is taking place, use discuss=Talk:Article name#Talk page section.
