Format Edit

I find myself wondering if the "Squad Pairings" section is actually going to ultimately hurt the guide. It's extremely long and, by nature, demands a repeat of quite a bit of information (extending the size). Plus, it's somewhat irritating to find the pairing you wish.

Just putting it out there, but I feel like the guide might be more accessible if it was set up to introduce the important aspects of pairings, then introduced some important gameplay aspects (specifically, tech explosions, biotic detonations, crowd-control, defense types, damage, range, and character defenses). From there, just use an extended biography. It removes the number of sections, but truncates the whole page without removing the information.

For example, with Liara (bare-bones example): -Very strong CC -Capable against barriers/armor -low weapon damage -low defenses -weak against shielded enemies (can't remove them, can't use biotics) -mid-range

Notable tactics. Singularity and Stasis for control, for forcing exposure (to weapons), for detonations, to alleviate incoming damage.

So you'd just mention the noteworthy pairings. In this case, I'd list Kaidan and Garrus (both of whom have range options, damage, shield removal, and generally superior defenses), with Ashely/James being fully viable if Shepard can remove shields.

Recommended pairings: Kaidan, Garrus. Decent damage, shield-counters, higher defenses, variable range (with Garrus), biotic combos (with Kaidan).

If Shepard can remove shields, Ashley/James. High damage, range options, high defenses.

EDI is a mid-range pairing. Uses same weapons, so same damage and range. Better defenses through Defense Matrix/Decoy, and counters to all enemy defensive types. Noteworthy only for Soldiers.

If the player wishes to rely on the AI, Tali is not recommended, due to her low defenses. But the combo can be powerful with micromanagement (drones add some defenses, and proper use of Singularity/Stasis adds control to further mitigate incoming damage while grouping enemies for Tali's shotgun).

Not recommended, Javik--too much overlap between skills, shares most weaknesses without adding new strengths.

To be clear, this is just typed off the top of my head. I'm using it as an example for formatting, not for Liara's entry. I just feel that this format will make the guide much cleaner. I figure it's better to discuss this now, before too much work is put into the pairings sections, just in case others agree with me. Idiggory 17:33, March 23, 2012 (UTC)

While I agree to a certain extent, I also have to say that just having them here is probably not a bad idea. The same thing was done on the ME2 version of the article, and it has been expanded and added onto over time. Until I can see a reason for them to be removed, I really can't justify removing them. Lancer1289 17:41, March 23, 2012 (UTC)
I added a few entries, and found myself thinking that perhaps a matrix of some kind summing up the various assets would work better. It's hard not to keep typing the same thing over and over again (e.g. if EDI's on your team, she can tank") Steveg700 11:29, March 25, 2012 (UTC)

Squad Outfit Bonuses Edit

So I noticed that different outfits give different bonuses to the squad members. I never knew this. Is it the same in Mass Effect 2? If so, we should probably add them here: http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Squad_Members_Guide_(Mass_Effect_2) or at the very least display images of every outfit like we did here. --Nimpe 02:21, April 3, 2012 (UTC)Nimpe

mass effect 2 outfits are purely cosmetic. Temporaryeditor78 02:26, April 3, 2012 (UTC)

Content of "Countering Enemies" Edit

Another user recently removed some work I put into this section, on the basis that it was redundant with the rest of the article. I had included suggestions and considerations for selecting squad members when planning to face each enemy faction. (For example, I explained why Overload and Stasis are key powers to have when facing Cerberus, which has a fairly obvious effect on which squad members you should bring along.)

I feel pretty strongly that, if it's going to remain part of the Squad Members Guide, the section should at least address helpful powers to use against each faction. As it stands, the section appears to be redundant with the individual faction pages. Anyone have any thoughts? Rmccowen 00:43, April 16, 2012 (UTC)

include bonus powers? Edit

I ask because of the odd system they use for acquiring bonus powers in ME3. Whether or not they should be included here, on the powers page or some other way. I recently experienced the glitch that wipes all bonus powers and am trying to find when you reacquire Kaidans powers that I hopefully don't have to do a complete replay for. A place that helps identify these key conversations would be beneficial. For instance I know that Fortification is your first conversation with James on the Normandy after visiting the Citadel. Decoy and Slam are both gotten after Horizon from EDI and Javik.--Xaero Dumort 08:42, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

I know Marksman is the talk with Ashley when at the Memorial Wall in the refugee camp with her sister. Bonus powers would probably be a good idea on this page and the powers page would direct you here.Fairfieldfencer FFF 11:21, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

So should they be listed under the characters themselves or have its own section? I'm leaning towards just putting them under the characters.--Xaero Dumort 18:06, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

Finding more locations. Garrus, Liara on Normandy after geth dreadnaught. Pretty sure that I get Kaidans from dinner (which I will have to replay for) and after sleeping with him. But that might only trigger if you have the first power. Because I just tried and nothing. I'm going to finish Cronos and see if a convo after might trigger....--Xaero Dumort 21:27, April 27, 2012 (UTC)
What do you mean exactly by this as I've been reading this a few times now and am still confused. Lancer1289 22:09, April 27, 2012 (UTC)
During the campaign, talking with the available squad members at certain points earns you one or more of their powers that you can then use as a Bonus Power. What Xaero wants to do is list when in the story and what you have to do to get these Bonus Powers so you don't have to speak with the squad mates after every mission. The research is being done, by the looks of it. Xaero just wants to make sure the information is getting put in the right place.Fairfieldfencer FFF 22:48, April 27, 2012 (UTC)
Exactly. I've looked and all I have found are partial lists or ones that are vague at best. It's information I know I want and I know others have looked for or started topics about on other sites. I feel it should be represented here. Or at least somewhere on the wiki.--Xaero Dumort 23:42, April 27, 2012 (UTC)

Alright after some work, I've got some info that's somewhat incomplete/might be a little inaccurate, but I wanted to give people a look and see how they feel about including it here. My Sandbox--Xaero Dumort 00:00, May 19, 2012 (UTC)

Expand just for that? I really have to say no. It really doesn't make sense and information like that should be covered on the Powers (Mass Effect 3) article. Lancer1289 00:02, May 19, 2012 (UTC)
Which would be fine, I just did the mock up for here originally and stuck with it. I just think the info needs to be somewhere.--Xaero Dumort 00:13, May 19, 2012 (UTC)

List Anderson? Edit

I haven't seen anything regarding Anderson as a squad mate, neither here or on his article. I know he's only a squad mate for one mission, but technically still a squad mate. If he's not included here, I think his powers should at least be listed on his article.Fairfieldfencer FFF 09:26, May 19, 2012 (UTC)

He's a squadmate for all of what? Ten Minutes? We don't have it for any other Temp squadmate, and I don't htink we should start now. Lancer1289 19:01, May 19, 2012 (UTC)

Add Squadmate Health and Shields? Edit

Just suggesting it might be a good idea to list the default and maximum health and shields of squaddies, taking into account squad bonuses, class powers and armour bonuses. Tali's no.1 fan (talk) 11:00, July 24, 2012 (UTC)

Squadmate Armour Bonuses Edit

Several squadmates have appearances which claim to boost shields, i.e. Garrus, Ashley, James, Kaidan and EDI. However, I have noticed the Squad screen showing boosts to health as well as shields by said appearances, at least for Garrus and James. Does anyone know whether this is an actual additional benefit, or an error in the squad screen? The article should include this information. Tali's no.1 fan (talk) 21:00, August 1, 2012 (UTC)

Please, someone respond. Do you know how many discussions I've started which NOBODY has responded to? (There's one above this one.) Tali's no.1 fan (talk) 11:25, August 2, 2012 (UTC)

Proposed Reorganization of Squad Member Outfits Edit

When trying to compare the different outfits for a particular squad member, I've found it inconvenient to have to look in each separate section to find the relevant info. I'd like to propose reorganizing the information into a table like the one I created on my talk page. The pictures have to be shrunk a bit more to fit properly, but I think it would make for a more convenient reference. Jbusnengo (talk) 08:46, February 25, 2013 (UTC)

I'd support this idea. :) Tali's no.1 fan (talk) 12:05, February 25, 2013 (UTC)
Sounds good to me. Garhdo (talk) 12:34, February 25, 2013 (UTC)
nah. this guy's work is better. It is better than what's currently on the page, but I'd prefer to have all options for a given squad member visible at a glance. Maybe it would make sense to use tabs to choose the squad member, but then show all options for that character at the same time? Jbusnengo (talk) 13:42, February 25, 2013 (UTC)

I'm not too big on it, due to the numerous blank spaces and that the current system makes it easier to see what DLCs give which outfits. If you want to make it easier to compare a single squadmate's outfits, perhaps a better idea would be to show each squadmate's outfits and bonuses on their character page, either using tabs or in the same fashion as this page.. I've thought about doing that myself, given that appearances in ME3 also give stat bonuses as compared to the purely-cosmetic outfits of ME2. LilyheartsLiara (talk) 14:01, February 25, 2013 (UTC)

I think a merging of both proposed systems would work. We have the tabs set up for either character or Source of the costume (my personal vote is for Character), and then have all costumes and abilities relevant to that tab heading listed as one page. For example if the tab heading is by Source then the From Ashes tab would have all the From Ashes costumes listed, or if the tab heading was by character, then Liara's would show all five or her costumes and the abilities they give her.
If someone could make mock-ups we could vote on it more easily. Garhdo (talk) 15:43, February 25, 2013 (UTC)
I have to say that if that is the new system, then I would also have to agree that I'm not big on it. It is hard to scroll through, and it also has the issue of not being consistent. We generally list things by packs, not by individuals. I think that the current system gives the information about each outfit, when it was released, and what it does.
I would also oppose putting it onto individual pages because that is for story information, not for gameplay information, which is what this article is for. The fact that weapon proficiencies and talents/powers are listed is something that can be explained with story information, but not alternate outfits and their respective bonuses.
As to the tabber system, well that could use more refinement, but I think the current system is probably the best option because it requires less button clicks to get all of the information. Scrolling is usually not as big of an issue than having to click the mouse 12 times to get the information. Lancer1289 (talk) 16:10, February 25, 2013 (UTC)

what i think we actually need is consensus on how the outfits should be presented based on grouping. what we decide should be retroactive so that we have consistency with ME2. we're big on consistency, that's why.

  1. as is. default-alternate-dlc-etc.
  2. according to squad member. under squad member, default-alternate-dlc-etc.
  3. separate page: ME2/ME3 outfits in one page, probably titled 'squad outfits'. then laid out according to suggestions 1,2 or 4. admit it, the outfits are interesting and numerous enough to stand on their own.
  4. any other suggestions, this is a community effort after all

i think we can all agree that we do not need unnecessary bloat given that the outfits are currently shoehorned into the bottom of the ME2/ME3 squad members guides which have lots and lots of text on their own. therefore:

  1. mandatory tabbing solutions for the first 2 suggestions.
  2. the tables thing can fly with some tweaks if separate page is warranted. bloat permitted to some degree because pictures have an entire article to themselves. although tabbing solutions still preferred in conjunction. synthesis!
  3. the default presentation can probably fly as well on a separate page. currently, pics are too tiny on both squad articles and we can't really enlarge them off the bat due to aforementioned bloat.

coding the tabbing and tabling solutions is easy enough, and given that the final dlcs for ME3 are coming i highly doubt we'll have anything more to add that warrants opposition due to "formating/usage difficulties" when entering new content.

let's have that discussion WHEN the new content actually arrives. we're probably good for a couple of years at least.

and for the tabber system as well, it ain't perfect but until someone presents a better non-overkill solution at organizing, we'll have to make do with this.

i liked shardoftruth's solution but i think it needs a bit more tweaking. too much blank space. easily remedied. this is where jbusnengo's idea comes in: single-row pseudotables under each squadmate tab. lulz.

PS apparently some people subscribe to the idea that sorting per squadmate is easier when it comes to viewing the outfits. asking where the outfits come from isn't likely on anyone's minds if they're trying to determine how squaddies look like in other alt outfits first. we have the DLC alt appearance article to show which outfits come from which pack (excepting N7 CE and from ashes since there are no good official caps for those), it wouldn't hurt give some leeway when actually presenting the dresses.

@jbusnengo: with your permission i'd like to implement some formatting fixes to your second take. nothing drastic, i assure you. I don't know if Temp's work has already been done, but I like the tabbed view right now. Lksdjf (talk) 09:10, March 4, 2013 (UTC)
figured i'd post this here since i'm still figuring out some things on the table: we can't put their full names because the tab headers spill over. but who cares anyway, it's not like we don't know who they are :p
i also have a tabber template for ME2 outfits sitting on my notepad, that one appears to have no issues but i'd rather focus on the current one now. Omega and Citadel DLCs Edit

Okay, yes, I know that Wrex is only available for the Citadel DLC while Aria and Nyreen are only for the Omega DLC. But seriously, what's keeping us from adding their entries in the squad members guide?

Yes, I know that you can't choose squad mates in the Omega DLC and yes I know that you can only fight Cerberus (and Cerberus wannabes CAT6), but that doesn't mean we can't suggest power builds and weapon selection for the three, and for Wrex, the squad pairings for the missions we can have him. --{{SUBST:User:GodzillaMaster/signature}} 18:49, May 14, 2013 (UTC)
