Ithaka name origin[]

It almost certainly is named for the island, going by the naming convention of the planet, that planet's parent system, and that system's parent cluster. Dracosummoner 18:22, June 11, 2010 (UTC)

It sure is, although I will point out that there isn't a 100% consistent 'naming convention' for the Athens system, as Pharos and Salamis kind of throw the Odyssey naming convention idea a wrench or two. However, I'm not sure why you felt the need to comment here, as the trivia is currently worded in compliance with site policy, and changing it to state that the city is a reference to Ithaca would violate said policy. • And actually, now that I think about it, I'm not so sure that it's named for the island itself. After all, the island of Ithaca was a big place, and most of the attention was focused on the actual city of Ithaca. And if we, as you say, look at the naming convention of the cluster, it makes much more sense for Ithaka to be named in reference to the ancient kingdom/polis of Ithaca, not the island itself, much as the Macedon system is likely named after the Kingdom of Macedon, not the modern state, and the Athens and Sparta systems are likely named after the ancient poleis, not the modern cities. So in that case, it may not reference the island at all. SpartHawg948 18:50, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Then do you think we should change it to reference the city instead? Lancer1289 18:51, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Maybe... because it turns out that there is quite a bit of scholarly debate as to whether Homer's Ithaca (aka the Ithaca Odysseus is trying to get home to in the Odyssey) is the same island that nowadays is referred to as Ithaca. Several of the neighboring islands are actually considered more likely candidates. SpartHawg948 18:57, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Then do you think it would be a better idea to remove the trivia altogether or reword it to say city? Lancer1289 18:58, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Already reworded it to say kingdom and changed the wiki link from the Ithaca article to the Homer's Ithaca article. Given the plethora of other Odyssey references, I don't see the need to remove it altogether, just reword it a tad, which I did! :) SpartHawg948 19:04, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Alright then. Lancer1289 19:07, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
