Game Informer image[]

I think the merc on the GameInformer article, with the black hair, tattoos and cybernetic upgrades is Kai Leng. The picture is in the Know Your Enemy section IIRC, and it wouldn't make sense for a no-nonsense Alliance soldier like James to dress like that (unless he was undercover in a merc unit, which I don't think is likely).--Darth Something 14:50, April 19, 2011 (UTC)

So you have a source for that as it could be a lot of things? It is a possibility but for the image to go here, we would need confirmation. If we want to specualate about who is in the image, then take it to the forums or a blog post as that isn't what a talk page is for. Lancer1289 15:57, April 19, 2011 (UTC)

- I got the Art Book early today, and the image in the Game Informer article (along with others that are similar to it) showed up in it, and is indeed Kai Leng. Has two whole pages dedicated to him. --Soren7550 03:34, February 16, 2012 (UTC)

Confirmed for ME3[]

According to the following:

http://www.gamer.nl/nieuws/67817/mass-effect-3-wordt-moeilijker

Kai Leng is the one ultimately sent to kill Shepard. The article is written in Dutch. Translating the relevant part using Google Translator yields this:

A character by that which Shepard has to deal with conflict is Kai Ling, an assassin with an aversion to aliens. He was previously addressed in Mass Effect: Retribution, the third book on the Mass Effect universe.

So, should we add it? Or wait for an English source? -- Fiery Phoenix 18:53, April 22, 2011 (UTC)

I would wait for an English source and another source altogether. I'm not entirely convinced that is a reliable source to begin with. Lancer1289 18:56, April 22, 2011 (UTC)
To be honest, Kai Leng in ME3 is anything but a stretch. I almost took it as a given that he would appear in one form or another. But I agree that we should wait for an English source to settle this. -- Fiery Phoenix 19:03, April 22, 2011 (UTC)
Not to mention that Google translators or Tradukka (which I sometimes use), have some flaws and don't appropriately translate certain terms, leaving some in the original language. Literary devices are also not picked up by the software (like idioms) in the exact way they are meant to be translated, and so an actual English source privy to the information is needed. Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem 19:09, April 22, 2011 (UTC)
This is a translation of the original article by a native Dutch speaker, given to javierabegazo, a moderator on the forums who is collecting ME3 info. Sounds perfectly legit to me. BioWare obviously invited magazines from all over the world to see the game, and each of them seems to have either seen some different stuff or simply picked up on things the others didn't. They also all got time with Casey Hudson, so got exclusive info in their interviews by asking different questions. Given the fact that in all other details this magazine article seems to have been based on the same visit all the other magazines had (a lot of the info matches), I think it is legit. Another thing that makes this sound legit to me is the concept art of the guy people thought was Sanders. In retrospect, it makes sense for that person to be Kai Leng. I'd like confirmation that this CHIEF magazine covered ME3 first, but they're website is down.JakePT 09:05, April 24, 2011 (UTC)
If that is what we have to work with, then this would seem to be OK, however I would also prefer to wait for something in English to absolute confirmation. Lancer1289 14:03, April 24, 2011 (UTC)

Just got confirmation from BiO on the ME3 talk that the image:

http://aspeb.com.ar/main/images/stories/Notas/Noticias/Multiplataformas/Mass_Effect_3/Mass-Effect-3-10-04-11-Game-Informer-012.jpg Is a concept art of Kai Leng. User:RevanSentinel 17:44, August 30, 2011 (UTC)

Where? I don't see any confirmation in the link you provided. SpartHawg948 21:50, August 30, 2011 (UTC)
I did a search, the general consensus seems to be that the image is of Kai Leng because of the ringer that Anderson put him through, but I searched for 30min and didn't find a source.--Xaero Dumort 05:20, August 31, 2011 (UTC)
Clarify: I talked to one of the Bio people. Actually, now that I think of it, just because a Bioware employee says it is the concept art, he could have made a mistake. But the image was just the one I found (I showed him the one from the magazine) online. User:RevanSentinel 18:25 September 3, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, even if he wasn't mistaken, it wouldn't be admissible. Hearsay isn't a valid source. It needs to be something that can be independently verified. Emails, conversations, etc, really don't qualify. SpartHawg948 22:37, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

I imported my Shepard from the ME2, and Miranda is alive. So when I talk with Miranda, she says sound like she now Kai Leng... and Shepard didnt ask nothing about it. So I want to ask, why she now he? André Freitas 20:39, April 29, 2012 (UTC)

Appearance in new trailers[]

We can get a look at what appears to be Kai Leng as it resembles the concept art at about 11 seconds into the video on this page Enemies.--Xaero Dumort 20:23, February 9, 2012 (UTC)

And from that, I got an image.

ME3KaiLeng

I'm going to wait until the admins give the O.K. for this before it's put into the article. LordDeathRay 21:03, February 9, 2012 (UTC)

While I agree that the character shown is Kai Leng, we currently have no evidence that identifies that character; basically, we can't connect the dots. Until BioWare confirms that the character is indeed Kai Leng, the image will have to remain out of the article. -- Commdor (Talk) 21:14, February 9, 2012 (UTC)
Fair enough. I'm a patient man. LordDeathRay 21:18, February 9, 2012 (UTC)
Are we sure it's not Adam from Deus Ex: Human Revolution? :p Matt 2108 16:38, February 10, 2012 (UTC)
Why would that guy be in mass effect 3? Reptileman778
It was a joke as demonstarted by the ":p". Lancer1289 17:37, February 10, 2012 (UTC)
Confirmed by Priestly. JakePT 09:57, February 11, 2012 (UTC)
Works for me. -- Commdor (Talk) 10:50, February 11, 2012 (UTC)

Another appearance in new Femshep trailer screencaped:

Capture

from femshep trailer at 00:59

also uploaded a concept of what I would say is Kai Leng. Judging from the story so far, and the fact that this is an unique character drawing. Unless of course Bioware decides to introduce another Asian looking Cerberus assassin going after Shepard who is not Kai Leng... be my guest. And judging from the discussion so far, a lot of people would agree with me.

Kai leng concept

Also about how there's no english source of this yet... well, I've got this Kai Leng concept photo from a polish site a while back (sadly can't find it anymore, it was mere luck that got me there). I'm guessing these leaked details only got published on sites that wouldn't have to worry about legal backslash from Bioware.

Hence the leaked plot details were published on a Russian site, et cetera...N7shep 14:30, February 11, 2012 (UTC)

So we will be putting a character box for kai leng?108.162.142.82 04:11, February 12, 2012 (UTC)
Probably in the near future, but not now. LordDeathRay 20:00, February 12, 2012 (UTC)

Name[]

"In Cantonese, the name "Kai" means "following intimately" or "unceasing", possibly alluding to his hunt for Grayson."

That is not the way a language like Chinese works. For all we know his name could be 鎧 (armour), because he's wearing one, 凱 (victorious), 愷 (joyful), 慨 (sad) or maybe 愾 (angry) all of which are read as 'Kai' - and countless more. Without an official source of his name in Hanzi no assumption regarding the meaning can be made. Knuff 19:23, February 15, 2012 (UTC)

Character template worthy?[]

Title more or less covers my inquiry, I feel that Kai Leng has a big enough presence in the game to warrant a character template akin to Udina or EDI since he does hound Shepard multiple times as a consistent enemy, and I was looking for some input into whether it is applicable or not? For the "class" field, Cerberus Assassin would serve, no? Thoughts? The Illusive Man 07:22, March 9, 2012 (UTC)

Seconded. He plays a major role in the game, and he's pretty much the only major antagonist in the game other than TIM, given that Harbinger only shows up in the last half hour. --FnordCola 01:04, March 13, 2012 (UTC)

End of final fight[]

The article lists two ways the final fight can end. Breaking his sword and stabbing him with the Omniblade is a Renegade prompt - is the other one a Paragon prompt, or does it just happen automatically if you don't do the first? --JimmyTheCannon 00:23, March 12, 2012 (UTC)

It happens automatically.

Enemy Page?[]

Are we going to use this page for his enemy info (shields, health, tactics etc.) or are we going to make another one for that? As an FYI, right now, the ME3 enemies template sends you here. Tanooki1432 18:19, March 25, 2012 (UTC)

Most likely, considering a few other major antagonists, like the Shadow Broker, have their statistics and tactics as enemies on their main pages.

Abilities[]

I've noticed that, despite him showing them off in cutscenes, he doesn't actually possess the Phantom abilities of Tactical Cloak, Barrier Gauntlet, or Impale. Is it just me, or has someone actually seen him use any of these powers? --RandomGuy96 10:01, April 13, 2012 (UTC)

  • Does no one know?--RandomGuy96 10:01, April 13, 2012 (UTC)

Deus Ex: Adam Jensen[]

Is it me but don't you think Kai Leng's prostheses look a bit like Adam Jensen's augmentations from the recent Deus Ex: Human Revolution? Templars1191 22:43, April 29, 2012 (UTC)

Wait for it..... ;) TheRealTerminal 23:19, April 29, 2012 (UTC)

I just remembered something...there was a character in Bioware's Jade Empire called Kai Leng the Serpent...think there's a relation between these two? DM89--65.26.27.69 02:06, June 29, 2012 (UTC)

Actually, it was Kai Lan The Serpent. He had the same voice as Teryn Loghain, as well. Odd series of coincidences in retrospect. But no, I don't think it was done on purpose. Mr. Mittens 02:11, June 29, 2012 (UTC)

I tried to make a note of that in the trivia section, since so many fans talk about it. But it just got deleted, despite there being obvious similarities. Does that not qualify for Trivia? It's not like its an isolated opinion, a quick Google search will tell you how many people agree with the opinion. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.18.203.92 (talk · contr).

irrelevant if 6,000,000,000 ME/DE fans made the purported connection. it's still fan speculation. cybernetics is cheap in scifiland and design aesthetics take cues from each other nowadays. get a bioware dev acknowledging the intent to make the similarities between the characters, properly sourced, and maybe it can go in. until then, no deal. ^ That about sums it up. Popular opinion and/or fan speculation is not grounds for valid trivia. Lancer1289 (talk) 14:44, June 13, 2013 (UTC)

Passing the message along[]

Just wondering, does Shepard ever pass along Thane's message (that he should be embarrassed because a terminally ill drell stopped him from assassinating his target) to Kai Leng, as Shepard said if the paragon dialogue is chosen when at Thane's deathbed? It would just be such a sweet response to his stupid taunts. Tali's no.1 fan (talk) 13:03, September 5, 2012 (UTC)

Interaction with Lash[]

I noticed in my last playthrough that Kai Leng is vulnerable to Lash (with lvl 6 evolution). I'm not sure whether it is important enough to include in the main page, and I haven't tested it extensively. My findings so far:

  • Despite his similarities to Phantoms, Kai Leng doesn't have rocket packs to return to his position, he can be yanked around freely.
  • During the fight in the Cerberus Headquarters, he can be lashed while recharging shields. This seems to abort the recharge (confirmation needed).
  • If he is lashed while attempting to reach a position (to wreck the floor), the fight will not proceed to the next stage until he is allowed to reach it.

Dossier & Tours of Duty[]

I notice that the Dossier and Tours of Duty section are close to verbatim from the email you receive on Kai Leng from Anderson, but there's an added parenthetical about killing a krogan in a bar that I don't see in the actual email. I also can't find that emails text on any particular page, is it somewhere? And is this section meant to be verbatim? Ale89515 (talk) 19:32, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Whoops I guess the Dossier email came from Hackett. Ale89515 (talk) 19:39, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
the krogan murdering came from one of the books if i recall. no time to recheck now, maybe later.
