Mechanics
- Main article: Conversation Choices
During conversation with characters, the Large Heart option will be presented by the conversation wheel at certain times. Selecting the Large Heart conversation choice is the flirtation option. Conversation choices along these lines deal with romance. This isn't an all or nothing conversation choice. Pathfinder Ryder has to flirt many times to develop a romance and the option to lock in a romance will be very clearly stated.- The Emotional Response Tone Choice during conversations DOES NOT move romances forward. This tone choice has a small heart icon but deals with Ryder's psychological profile and has nothing to do with romance.
- Some potential romantic partners prefer one sex to the other. If Ryder is not of the preferred sex, deepening friendship will replace romance. If Ryder has the option to choose the Large Heart option during conversations, dialogue that is normally romantic with a potential partner will be changed to dialogue that deepens the friendship.
- Other than adding color to the storyline, romancing or not romancing a character has no impact on storyline missions. Some relationships will see some side missions and cutscenes progress differently if a romance is under way with relationships adding minor missions exclusive to couples with an active romance.
- The Tempest is a small ship; once a romance has been locked in - or even if Ryder has simply flirted a number of times with a crewmember - other crewmembers will begin to notice and mention this in random dialogue and answers to questions, particularly Lexi. SAM will also ask Ryder questions about romance.
- Two characters will have a fling with Ryder that will not impact romance with other characters (even if another romance is already locked in). Pelessaria B'Sayle and Keri T'Vessa.
- At various parts of the game, Ryder receives the option to flirt with several other characters who, for various reasons, turn down the overture. These include Dr. Lexi T'Perro, Nakmor Drack, and Paaran Shie.

Romance Missions
These missions are the culmination of the romance with a character. Prior character specific missions leading up to these missions with a character may or may not involve romance.
