For any single-player Vanguard players here: does the Piranha Shotgun render melee-oriented Vanguard builds obsolete? I've recently started a new playthrough, wherein I originally intended to create a brawl-and-Lash Vanguard character, though I'm no longer certain why melee attacks are a good choice of tactics or a good choice of character builds. Anyone here have any views? The Supreme Deity (talk) 05:32, October 12, 2013 (UTC)

I Actually started a Vanguard playthrough with the Piranha not long ago. The high fire rate and large ammo clip do make melee a bit redundant, although Charge-ing Ravager and heavy melee it is allot of fun (and actually at times, is a better tactic). --silverstrike (talk) 06:38, October 12, 2013 (UTC)
Heavy melee makes one immune to damage while the animation plays. The Krogan Vanguard also has a prodigious melee and damage protection bonus while in Rage, so using Charge and melee, one after another, continues to make this build viable. It's not a wonder why this build is highly recommended when attaining the gold solo challenge. ouisehjk 07:08, October 12, 2013 (UTC)
Melee has the advantage over guns of having unlimited uses. In addition, while the Piranha is quite good at very close range, that's the only range it's good at, even compared to other shotguns (especially the Graal or GPS). The Piranha can work well at close range and even to compliment melee attacks, but you're trading the greater range versatility you'd have with other shotguns.
