Mass Effect Wiki
Forums: Index > Watercooler > Direction of wiki -- game guide or encyclopedia?

Greetings!

As a veteran of Wookieepedia and a recent (as in: the last month and a half) inductee into the Mass Effect universe, I cannot help but think about the current state of the Mass Effect wiki. With two (IMHO, very good) novels released in addition to the game and its planned sequels, would it not be a good idea to start taking this site in a more professional direction? I'm not saying that articles about gameplay mechanics should be deleted, far from it, in fact, but simply suggesting that a concerted effort be made to organize a professional-looking encyclopedia.

As can be gleamed from my opening, I do think that this wiki could benefit greatly from a Wookieepedia-esque makeover, including such things as tweaked infoboxes, advisory templates, and categorization, as well as article highlights.--{{SUBST:User:Goodwood/sig}} 00:56, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your input, but I'm not really sure by what you mean by a 'professional' direction. This is a fan-made and fan-run wiki designed to appeal to all editors, not just pros. The pages are already categorised, we have featured articles, and some stunning work has been done to develop planetary templates and infoboxes. --Tullis 01:04, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Your pardon, then.

Well, it's difficult to describe, really. Wookieepedia isn't really "professional" either in the sense that it's written by fans of Star Wars, just like this wiki is written by fans of Mass Effect. Surely a foray into documenting stuff from the books would be desirable, for example.--{{SUBST:User:Goodwood/sig}} 01:14, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Um, we actually have articles on the novels, including characters, full story summaries, and concepts which are also integrated into other pages. : ) Just to seize on one point, namely infoboxes, I personally prefer to be sparing with them for two reasons. One, it kind of feels demeaning to reduce complex characters, situations and ideas to entries in a box when they deserve to be explained properly in-article. Using them sparingly for notable characters underlines their importance. Two, I have to use Wookieepedia quite a bit and I find that, with a universe that big, the infoboxes become enormous and confusing to a Star Wars ignoramus like me, especially on very important articles. --Tullis 01:21, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
