Considering, as of right now, there's only 5 Mass Effect 3 party members revealed (2 of which could potentially be dead by the time of ME3.) I'm guessing we'll have 6 Party members, same as the first Mass Effect. My theory comes into place, regarding the fact that it was stated that some party members may be "optional".

I've got an idea that the optional party members are any of the still living ME2 romance options. (Miranda, Jacob, Jack, Thane, Tali and Garrus, the latter two are already confirmed to be returning. Samara and Morinth notwithstanding, only counting the party members who you can get the Paramour achievement for romancing.) It was also stated that the romances would be in depth, and there would be conflict and love triangles. I think such conflict can only arise if your potential LIS are in the party.

So I'm assuming that your ME2 romance is "locked in" as a party member (if you had one) and you can choose 2 of the other remaining ones as your optional party members. It makes sense that they would make any LIs fleshed out characters in the sequel, especially if they're planning on reaching a satisfying conclusion to that aspect of Shepard's story.

I don't have any real proof of this theory or much logic behind it, beyond the brief description I wrote. But the idea came to me and it makes at least a small amount of sense. Plus, every one of the Mass Effect 2 Romance options, what do they really have to do after Mass Effect 2 beyond continue to follow/assist Shepard?
