Corporal Toombs was one of the Alliance marines at Akuze. He was a survivor of the thresher maw tragedy there. Cerberus was responsible for setting the thresher maws on his unit as part of an experiment. When he was found after the attack, Cerberus was delighted that he had survived and hauled him off for further study. Toombs was subjected to horrific ordeals including being injected with thresher maw acid.

Mass Effect Edit

Somehow Toombs managed to escape his confinement and began systematically hunting down the scientists responsible. He is encountered during Shepard's assignment to investigate dead Alliance scientists. The situation takes a different angle if Commander Shepard has the Sole Survivor background.

While investigating the deaths of the scientists, Shepard encounters Toombs on Ontarom, about to kill the last scientist, Dr.Wayne. Shepard can listen to Toombs' story and either talk him down (putting the scientist on public trial for his crimes and allowing Toombs to get psychological treatment) or allow Toombs to kill the scientist, believing he has earned his revenge. Shepard can also kill the scientist personally, using his authority as a Spectre. Alternately, Shepard may shoot Toombs to prevent his act of vengeance, allowing the scientist to live, after which he can call the Fifth Fleet to pick the doctor up and put him on trial. Depending on circumstances, if Shepard is a Sole Survivor, Toombs will point out that the vids say Shepard was the only one to escape Akuze, adding "who am I to argue?" before killing himself.

Mass Effect 2 Edit

If Toombs survived in 2183, he will send Shepard a message at some point in 2185. He details his anger at Shepard's apparent change of allegiance to Cerberus, feeling somewhat betrayed at how Shepard had been understanding of his plight on Ontarom but seems to have forgotten it now. He also tells Shepard that he is now working with a mercenary band and informs that the Commander is subject to his policy of killing any and all Cerberus operatives he encounters. Shepard may also overhear a Galactic news report stating that he is expected to appear in court as a witness against Cerberus. Other Cerberus activities may be mentioned during this report such as Cerberus' involvement with the death of Admiral Kahoku and if the scientist, Dr. Wayne survives, he will be granted immunity and testify against Cerberus as well.

• Interestingly, while Cerberus's work with Husks, rachni and Creepers is mentioned at several points, the option of bringing up the organization's involvement with the incident on Akuze and their subsequent treatment of Toombs is never available.
• Chris Postle, who voices Corporal Toombs, also voices several other characters in the Mass Effect franchise: Jahleed, Manuel, and the Normandy Requisitions Officer. Previously, he provided the voices for Gravedigger Shen and the Rat Demon in BioWare's Jade Empire.
